Amateur Radio Examinations

 

Butte Radio Club offers amateur radio in-person exams in association with Laurel VEC on the first Thursday of odd numbered months (except July) at 7 p.m. A list of exam dates can be found on the Laurel VEC website. 

Exams are held at the Butte-Silver Bow Emergency Operations Center located at 3615 Wynne Ave. in Butte.

Laurel VEC and Butte Radio Club do not charge an exam fee. The FCC charges $35 for new licenses (and renewals) which should be paid directly to them on their government website. The FCC does not charge fees for license upgrades.

What should I bring to the exam?

  • A copy of your existing Amateur Radio License (if you are upgrading)
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Email address
  • FCC Registration Number (FRN)
  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Photo ID
  • The original and a copy of any CSCE (certificate of successful completion) you will apply as credit for a license
  • Scrap paper will provided by the Volunteer Examiners as needed.

Electronic devices such as cell phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, headphone, etc. are not permitted to be used or visible during the exam.

Each exam must be completed in one sitting. If you are taking more than one exam, you may take them in any order. You make take a break between exams.

FCC Registration Number (FRN)

You must obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN) before attending the exam. If you've had any type of FCC license in the past, use the FRN from that license. Otherwise, you can get a new FRN instantly by registering with the FCC here: https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/publicHome.do
